More Mobile Phone Boot Camp dates announced

More Mobile Phone Boot Camp dates announced

Come and take part in The Family Centre (New Addington), Myatts Field North (Brixton/ Oval) and the Wellness Centre (Croydon)

In 2022, our Mobile Phone Boot Camps proved to be one our most popular programmes and proved to us that by working in small groups and discussing some of the stresses and annoyances about phones can bethe difference for many people.

We all get annoyed when smart phones don’t do what they should, that notifications can be stressful if we don’t understand what they mean and the information we hear about safety and the internet can be overwhelming!

Slowing down, practicing our accuracy and giving ourselves some space to think can be the tonic that makes a difference!

This year we want to help more people just be that little more independent and to feel safer with their phone when out and about. This could be you or a family member!

The format is simple; Each session there will be a variety of activities to try, depending on number of people and the activities available.

Over a typical session you may get to try two or three activities and share what you have learned over a cup of tea.

And so, we’re excited to announce 8 new dates, across The Wellness Centre (Croydon), The Family Centre (New Addington) and Myatts Field North (Between Brixton/ Oval).

Purley Digital Drop-In opens its doors

Purley Digital Drop-In opens its doors

We are really excited to be FINALLY opening the doors to a new Digital Drop-In at the Purley Cross Information Centre, Purley Cross Baptist Church, Banstead Rd, Purley CR8 3EA.

Our regular sessions at Brigstock Road with Age UK Croydon still remain our most popular and busiest drop-in we run with referrals from many Croydon – wide organisations.

However, the most common question we get in our feedback form is

‘When are you coming to the south of the Borough?’

Brilliant idea…. and here we are!

So every Tuesday 10am-12pm you can come and get questions answered and problems solved with your laptop, tablet or mobile phone.

Perhaps you just want to see what the fuss is all about with this internet stuff or perhaps you just want to practice.

Well, the doors are open to everyone, every week over a cup of tea!

We will be looking for helpers soon so if you wish to give back and help, this could be right for you. More of that in a few weeks.

But for now lets get the doors open, the extension leads plugged in and screens turned on!

ClearCommunityWeb host AGE UK London and ‘Mind the Digital Gap’

ClearCommunityWeb host AGE UK London and ‘Mind the Digital Gap’

We are really excited to invite Sharon Tynan from Age UK London to talk about the ‘Mind The Digital Gap’ campaign to our Digital Awareness For Older People class.

Tuesday 29th November 11.00am on Zoom

We will hear more about the campaign and how they are working with Croydon Council and other London Boroughs to provide a voice for older people in how digital services are currently working ang what provision needs improvement.

Key to this is championing the fact that not everyone is online, those that are are not always confident or comfortable and that online services are not always easy to use, navigate or work.

Come and join us on Zoom

Age UK London are campaigning for urgent action to address the profound challenges of digital exclusion impacting the daily lives of thousands of older Londoners. The gap between those with and without access to the internet is widening. Internet providers, the Mayor of London and Local Authorities all have crucial roles to play and action is needed more than ever. Accelerating access to digital skills training to increase confidence online would make the single biggest difference.

They are calling for:

• An age-friendly roll-out of the new digital skills entitlement.

• More social tariffs and genuinely affordable access to the internet for older Londoners on low incomes.

• Easier to understand broadband contracts.

• Boroughs to ensure equal access to information, support and services for older Londoners offline.
